Classic Californian Style

An effortless blend of coastal, cottage and contemporary with mid-century accents, it’s no surprise that classic Californian style is an enduring favourite. Combining modern and traditional design with an undone elegance, this timeless look is characterised by rich texture, calming neutrals and natural materials, drawing inspiration from the culture, architecture and lifestyle of the West Coast to create a unique and adaptable aesthetic that exudes comfort, personality and heritage.   Many hallmarks of classic Californian style as we know it today arose from the Mission Revival Style of the late 19th century, which mimicked the Spanish missions built a century earlier. Harking back to simpler times, the white stucco walls, clay tile roofs, large, curved windows and sun-drenched patios became a significant inspiration for Californian architecture long after, with ornamental detailing largely eschewed for clean lines and solid, exposed rafters.     1936 Spanish Mission style Sydney home by architect Allan Edgecliff Stafford revamped by Studio Kate.    When the Art Deco movement began to flourish in the 1920s, decorative accents became more prevalent – rich, bold colour and lush texture – which were later tempered by the subtle restraint of mid-century modernist design and its emphasis on function. The result was a backdrop centred on organic shapes, natural materials and rich tactility that set the mood for unique yet timeless furnishings  – from eclectic vintage finds to handcrafted statement pieces – that tell a story.     Photography by Ricardo Labougle. via Architectural digest   A hybrid of several popular styles, classic Californian style is highly versatile and lends itself to contemporary, light-filled spaces as much as a bold, moody bungalow of blues and greens, as observed in this decadent yet lived-in Ojai residence. Designer by Nickey Kehoe balances plush and playful while maintaining a traditional edge, featuring our Flocca Linen Duvet in Carmel in the bedroom to imbue warmth to earthy greens and greys. Complete the look with Brun, Nox and Mare to create a sumptuous sleep haven at home, while benefiting from the softness, breathability and year-round comfort of pure linen bedding.    Featuring: Flocca Linen Duvet in Carmel.   The traditional elements of classic Californian style reference a cottage look synonymous with tranquil beach houses dotted along the west coast, a wholesome, handcrafted approach that surged in popularity during the pandemic. More time spent at home saw a shift away from wild patterns and bold trends and a move towards comforting, classic interiors that evoke a sense of connection to people and place, with a high/low mix of antiques, mid-century statement pieces and modern luxuries achieving a worldly yet cosy feel.     Featuring: Flocca Linen body cushion and Flocca Linen pillowcases in Floss. This contemporary retreat by interior designer Vanessa Alexander exudes classic Californian style with a strong cottage influence, from the fresh white palette to the thoughtful blend of vintage and modern furnishings. In the sun-dappled bedroom, a feminine, earthy scheme creates the perfect balance of lightness and texture, with our Flocca Linen Body Pillow featured in Floss. The hand-tufted edges of our Flocca range are a nod to a traditional cottage style, their understated detail offering a handcrafted accent that delights in its simplicity. Complete the look with soothing Petra and our warming Basix Stripe Linen pillowcase in Carmel/Tempest.    Featuring: Flocca Linen Blanket in Sable. This stunning space by Amber Interiors ticks all the boxes when it comes to quintessential Californian style – calming, neutral hues enriched with texture, coupled with a thoughtful curation of statement pieces and timeless accents that blur the lines between modern and traditional. Our Flocca Linen Blanket in light and sandy Sable is the ideal accompaniment to this elegant bedroom, with tan leather, timber and ceramics adding further layers of textural interest. Complete the look with Kali, Carmel and Russo to enrich a pared-back palette with warm, earthy tones.

Life/Style Migration

It is likely you've heard about friends, family or colleagues making a 'tree change' or 'sea change' in recent years, or perhaps you’ve even made one yourself. During the pandemic, Australia – and indeed the world – has seen a great shift from urban to rural living, with many people deserting city centres in favour of smaller country and coastal villages. This regional relocation is not only satisfying a desire for a simpler life, but it has also inspired a renewed approach to style and design centred around an appreciation for small everyday pleasures. A collective craving for a slower pace has brought about both a geographical and cultural shift, with those moving away from cities seeing themselves and their homes from a fresh perspective. Travelling from cosmopolitan capitals to the countryside or coast, these tree- and sea-changers are bringing with them their contemporary sensibilities and leaving behind the hurriedness of modern life, creating space to discover what feels meaningful and authentic.    The Burrows, Swansea Tasmania with views overlooking Great Oyster Bay. @the_burrows_swansea  | Featuring: Flocca Linen Body Cushion, Flocca Linen Cushions and Basix stripe cushion in Fog/Tempest.   Heightened regard for all things slow is seeing us increasingly wanting to surround ourselves with handmade, high-quality pieces – from interiors to fashion – that tell a story, are classic in their design and are made to last. Spending more time at home than ever before, it has become paramount that we create a space that satisfies an innate need for connection to each other, and to the natural world. Artisan skills are seeing a resurgence, with ceramics and basket weaving popular examples of how traditional handicrafts can bring both beauty and functionality to our living spaces.  While a rural reset in itself can be beneficial to our wellbeing, there is also a strong tendency toward nature-inspired design, where colours, shapes and materials are chosen – either intentionally or subconsciously – for their ability to evoke the same soothing and restorative effects of being in the outdoors. Our signature range of pure lining bedding in muted, earthy tones is the perfect way to bring nature’s palette into your home, from the mushroom-hued Cep and forest-green Silva to our grounding pinks and tranquil blues. Accents of oceanic Mare, chocolate-hued Bere, and our muted mulberry tone Moro are ideal for imbuing warmth to our core neutral palette and reflecting rich outdoor tones.    Crush Linen Blanket in Silva, a new deep emerald green hue inspired by Farway Forrest.  |   Piero Portaluppi’s Villa Necchi via @moro_dabron   Classical influenced modern kitchen by deVOL Kitchens @devolkitchens  |  Earthy textural hues from Earthy Dreamscape Shop our Style.   This connection to the landscape extends beyond interior design into the field of architecture, with new builds and renovations exploring innovative, creative solutions to ensure eco-conscious construction is just as important as aesthetics when it comes to creating our rural sanctuaries. Rich in softness and textural beauty, a palette of Rosa, Cep, Mare, Brun, Floss, Moro, and Sable combine harmoniously to create a bedroom sanctuary that is both grounding and heavenly.    Flocca Linen Duvet in Rosa and Flocca Linen Flat Sheet in Cep and Rosa. See Full scheme in Shop our Style here.   For this look, we took inspiration from French visual artist Eva Jospin’s installation ‘Silk Room’, created for the Dior Autumn-Winter 2021-2022 Haute Couture Show at Musee Rodin in Paris, where the artist has used silk thread as well as hemp, linen and cotton to create an enchanting landscape. Embroidered entirely by hand, the work pays tribute to both the Embroidery Room at the Colonna Palace in Rome and to Virginia Woolf’s feminist manifesto A Room of One’s Own.     ‘An invitation to contemplation and imaginary journeys; a moment suspended in time where illusion enhances reality’       Eva Jospin's fanciful creation references utopian landscapes and monuments inspired by 18th-century Capriccios, forests, lianas, rocks and waterfalls, and places conducive to reverie and strolling, like the follies of baroque gardens. In a similar way, Earthy Dreamscape evokes a soothing outdoor landscape reflecting nature’s exquisite palette. Our clay pink Rosa and whisper-soft Floss lend warmth and feminity to lush, verdant Armee, while Moro and Brun invite richness to subtle, classic neutrals Cep and Sable.    Our dreamy winter look also draws inspiration from a luxurious ski chalet designed by Ken Fulk, nestled in the mountains of Vail, Colorado. Created with a storybook sense of wonder, the interiors are an imaginative balance of playfulness and sophistication. In the bathroom, a whimsical forest mural by American artist Rafael Arana conjures otherworldly landscapes, while in the cosy game room and bar, sumptuous draperies envelop the space to create the feeling of a lavish tent.           Informed by these reflective visions and artisan qualities, Earthy Dreamscape offers effortless elegance and understated luxury, from our delicately embroidered Basix Linen Quilt to our indulgent Crush Double Linen Throw. Focus on Colour: Moro

You may have noticed various beautiful, rich tones of mulberry, plum and burgundy making an appearance in the interior design world in recent years, however these gorgeous hues are more than a passing trend. In addition to their discernible aesthetic appeal, these sumptuous and inviting shades are highly versatile, transcending all seasons and coordinating harmoniously with a wide range of colours to stunning effect.  Our much loved Moro is our softened, muted mulberry shade, designed to mix and match exquisitely with our signature range of subdued, earthy hues. Moro pairs perfectly with both cool and warm shades – we particularly love it layered with our rich toffee tone Brun – and can instantly add vibrancy and a depth of character to a neutral palette. Mulberry is used by stylists and interior designers to imbue timeless yet statement-making colour to any space, from deep and rich shades to subtle and subdued variations.     Flocca Bedhead 'Short' in Moro, Flocca Body Cushion in Moro, Crush Double Throw in Moro/Floss.   In Sally Caroline's Palladiana Party makeover project, the designer took inspiration from the Melbourne bayside building's heritage as well as the owner's joyous and bold personality when she enlisted soft, muted tones including deep wine hues, pairing them with pink, green and gold to create a sense of playfulness and breathe new life into the historic home.     Palladiana Party, Interiors by Sally Caroline.
